History

Alden was reassigned to Destroyer Division 58 and then spent the next several weeks escorting troop and supply convoys to help defend the Malay Barrier. On the morning of 20 January 1942 she was escorting Trinity to Port Darwin when Trinity reported torpedoes being fired at her. Alden immediately reversed course and carried out a depth charge attack but in the ensuing moment lost contact with the submarine. Alden and Edsall patrolled one area in proximity of the submarine contact while two Australian ships patrolled another.,
